Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a martial art that enables the unarmed practician to defeat or repel an opponent using hands and feet. All of its activities are based on defensive spirit since Taekwondo was developed as a defense against enemy attacks. Even in todays competitions 90% of all points are scored on so-called counter-attacks, i.e. responding to an attack. Taekwondo also serve to improve health, physical fitness and poise of the people practicing it.

Taekwondo is a korean martial art turned modern international sport which has been independently developed over about 20 centuries, and is currently practiced by some 40 million people in more than 142 countries. Taekwondo as a sport has been an olpympic event since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Australia. Competitions also include technical championships, where practicians compete at performing the most perfect series of technics. These will not be a part of the olympic program yet.

It is important to note however that competition is only a small part of Taekwondo and most practicians have never and will never compete. Taekwondo is mainly a martial art and is therefore as much an art for the spirit as it is for the body.
